The Permanent Tax Revolt
Tax cuts are such a pervasive feature of the American political landscape that the political establishment rarely questions them. Since 2001, Congress has abolished the tax on inherited wealth and passed a major income tax cut every year, including two of the three largest income tax cuts in American history despite a long drawn-out war and massive budget deficits. The Permanent Tax Revolt traces the origins of this anti-tax campaign to the 1970s, in particular, to the influence of grassroots tax rebellions as homeowners across the United States rallied to protest their local property taxes. Isaac William Martin advances the provocative new argument that the property tax revolt was not a conservative backlash against big government, but instead a defensive movement for government protection from the market. The tax privilege that the tax rebels were defending was in fact one of the largest government social programs in the postwar era. While the movement to defend homeowners' tax breaks drew much of its inspiration-and many of its early leaders-from the progressive movement for welfare rights, politicians on both sides of the aisle quickly learned that supporting big tax cuts was good politics. In time, American political institutions and the strategic choices made by the protesters ultimately channeled the movement toward the kind of tax relief favored by the political right, with dramatic consequences for American politics today. - 54.45

S Corporation Taxation Guide, 2005
The 2005 S Corporation Taxation Guide gives you a complete roadmap to all of the money saving strategies available involving S Corporations, now the most popular entity for closely held business. While changes in the law over the last few years have helped to make this entity an even better tax-savings structure, these tax relief measures are complex and confusing. The 2005 S Corporation Taxation Guide uses extensive examples to illustrate both simple and complex situations. In areas where authorities do not provide clear guidance, the author constructs plausible courses of action, with appropriate analysis. The 2005 S Corporation Taxation Guide focuses on the rules of Subchapter S of the Internal Revenue Code and integrates these rules with other portions of the tax law, which can have important effects on S corporations and their shareholders. At the end of each chapter are pertinent checklists, worksheets and sample election letters. - 39.56

The Seventies
The '70s have always been known for bad hair, forgettable music, and their function as a bridge between the tumultuous1960s and the Reagan-era '80s. But Bruce J. Schulman's insightful study reveals the decade as, among other things, the era in which the politics and attitudes of the South finally came of age and started to influence the rest of America. Significantly, the Country Music Association held its annual conference in Manhattan for the first time in 1973, while new-found fundamentalist religious values started to take root across the country. THE SEVENTIES is an in-depth examination of issues like busing, spiritual exploration, the country's post-Jimmy Carter rightward turn, social consciousness in the movies and rock & roll, and the women's rights movement. In a readable, enlightening, and informative narrative, Schulman gives equal time to mid-'70s punk rock and the California-led clamor for tax relief later in the decade; the emergence of the doctrine of 'diversity' as an answer to the discrediting of integration as a political and social force; and the growth of the personal awareness movement, as embodied by various New Age philosophies. Schulman's '70s are years of fiscal uncertainty and socio-political tumult. Beginning in 1972 with Richard Nixon's invocation of the 'silent majority,' and ending with Ronald Reagan and the triumphal 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, they set the scene for the 21st century, conservatism, and the war on terror. - 12.09

Don't Think Of An Elephant! (Paperback)
In this voter guide to the 2004 presidential election, George Lakoff, a highly respected political theorist, explains what makes voters vote, and issues a wakeup call to progressives to heed his warnings and learn to play the high-stakes game of politics. A linguist and cognitive scientist, Lakoff has had tremendous impact far beyond those disciplines. His previous work, MORAL POLITICS, introduced the idea that conservatives and liberals have different worldviews, and that voters think in terms of metaphors: they do not vote on issues or personalities, they vote because of language. Lakoff says that conservatives understand this, and that the right wing succeeds by controlling the debate, using an appeal to values and by framing things in terms of the metaphor of the family. In DON'T THINK OF AN ELEPHANT, Lakoff, in a more overt manner, applies his thesis specifically to George W. Bush, whom he sees as a worst-nightmare-come-true example of what he theorized about in the 1990s. Lakoff shows how, using Orwellian language tricks (tax cuts are called tax relief), Bush& Co. have virtually hijacked whole areas of debate, such as terrorism and 9/11, and made them their own. It is futile, Lakoff claims, to argue on their terms. Instead, he exhorts the left to learn what the conservatives already know, and to frame the debate on their own terms, pointing out that the authoritarian metaphor offered by the right appeals to many but by no means all voters: progressives should play to their strengths, and offer a counter frame--that of the nurturing family--which embodies truly progressive values. Lakoff believes his strategy will attract a large segment of voters and keep the Democratic party on its course. - 7.92
