Inflation and the Personal Income Tax (Paperback)
Inflation distorts income taxes in many ways, but primarily by redistributing the tax burden among taxpayers. This study analyses in detail the effects of inflation on income tax systems in many countries. It examines some of the more important distortions of income tax systems caused by inflation and discusses possible corrective measures, ranging from automatic adjustments (indexation) to ad hoc responses. These corrective measures are compared with the actual experiences of many countries that have pursued policies aimed at neutralizing the effects of inflation. By treating the problem of inflation and income taxes in a comprehensive manner and from an international perspective, this book fills an important gap in the income tax literature and will prove valuable to professional economists, policy makers concerned with tax problems, tax lawyers and accountants. - 42.57

Plot Against Harry (Widescreen)
Filmed independently by Michael Roemer in 1969, "The Plot Against Harry" didn't earn a mainstream release until 1989. What was contemporary in 1969 became a period piece by the time it saw the light of day, but this anachronistic quality lent a great deal of charm to the proceedings. Harry Plotnick (Martin Priest) is a once-notorious criminal whose life becomes a series of comic disasters once he's released from prison. His family members either refuse to acknowledge his existence or think the very worst of him, and his health rapidly deteriorates. Meanwhile, Harry's brother Max (Henry Nemo), beset with tax problems, sets fire to his business. Naturally, poor Harry is held responsible. Just when he has an opportunity to start life anew, Harry suffers a heart attack on a TV marathon. Certain that he's about to die, Harry confesses to all his past transgressions-and ends up behind bars once more. In lesser hands, "The Plot Against Harry" might have been clumsy or, even worse, maudlin. But with Michael Roemer at the helm, the laughs never stop-even though we sometimes feel guilty at deriving pleasure from poor old Harry's misery. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide. Willie Nelson - Triple Feature [Digipak]
The Triple Feature series by Sony Legacy compiles three -- usually well-known -- catalog albums by big-name artists, assembles them in a slipcase box, and sells them at a budget price to consumers. While the reason may be simply a new package in order to clear shelves of excess inventory, this exercise also serves a purpose for collectors and fans filling in holes for a favorite artist. This Willie Nelson volume contains a recording each from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. None of these albums were particularly big hits, but they all contain quality tunes. Sound in Your Mind was recorded in 1976 near the end of the outlaw era -- it contains a number of Nelson performance classics, such as his readings of 'That Lucky Old Sun,' Lefty Frizzell's 'If You've Got the Money (I've Got the Time),' and a medley of 'Funny How Times Slips Away,' 'Crazy,' and 'Night Life.' Somewhere Over the Rainbow was issued in 1981 as a follow-up to his smash Stardust set, and is comprised of more readings of standards. It may not quite measure up to the earlier album, but it nonetheless features Nelson in fine form in an excellent program of material. Finally, 1993's Across the Borderline, recorded at the height of his tax problems, contains readings of more contemporary tunes like the title track and Paul Simon's 'Graceland,' as well as some excellent self-penned songs. The overall quality of the material and presentation is a little uneven, but there's plenty here to make this worthwhile. The price tag on the Triple Feature series is so cheap that it's almost impossible not to pick it up if only for material you don't already have. ~ Thom Jurek Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
